(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) Psychologically, tension means excited expectation or apprehension of a proposed event which is either particularly desired or feared.

Physically, tension describes a force within a resilient body.

Mechanical tension (symbol σ) is the force per surface unit which acts in an imaginary section plane through a body, a fluid or a gas.

Tension is also the most important instrument of playwrights and authors for motivating the viewer and reader to watch and read further.

The applicaton of all these different definitions to a single vehicle - viewed from all aspects - is demonstrated by AC Schnitzer at the IAA 2005 with the Concept Car:

TENSION

The basis for the extensive conversion could only be one vehicle: the 507 HP BMW M6, which underwent a performance upgrade as the first development stage. Optimising the entire engine management system and fitting a new AC Schnitzer exhaust manifold system with special catalyst, sports rear silencer with chromed tailpipe trims in right/left combination in "Sports Trim Design" help the TENSION achieve an incredible 406 kW / 552 HP. The Sports Trim Design will also shortly be included in the AC Schnitzer sports rear silencer range exclusively for the new BMW M vehicles .

Even more imposing than the pure engine power is the maximum torque of 540 Nm at 6200 rpm, which pushes the driver back in the seat and catapults the TENSION explosively to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds.

The AC Schnitzer Vmax delimiter means that the acceleration thrust continues to 325 km/h before the speedo needle can relax - where driving conditions allow.

Conversely of course tremendous forces are also necessary to bring the TENSION back to a standstill. To achieve good deceleration values, development of an AC Schnitzer high performance braking system was essential. On the front axle this takes the uncompromising form of an 8-pot fixed caliper with perforated and vented brake disks in 374 mm diameter and with 36 mm thick brake discs. On the rear axle, a 4-pot fixed caliper is used in conjunction with the standard brake discs.

For both acceleration and deceleration, it is the wheels which are permanently under full load in all manoeuvres. To take account firstly of the safety aspect and secondly to fulfil the high technical requirements imposed on the new Concept Car by our engineers, a completely new wheel had to be developed.
The result is the AC Schnitzer "Forged Wheel": a lightweight forged wheel with
bi-colour finish, i.e. it has a part polished, part painted surface. The forged wheel embodies an apparent contradiction: reduction in weight with at the same time the largest possible diameters and widths.

The TENSION is fitted with wheels size 10.0J x 20" all round. The offsets of -12 on the front and -2 on the rear allow tyres of size 285/30 ZR 20 respctively, of type MICHELIN Pilot Sport 2.

The weight of the front wheel is approx. 10 kg and the rear wheel 10.8 kg. But the AC Schnitzer Forged Wheels are not reserved exclusively for the TENSION. From December 2005 this new wheel type will also enrich the AC Schnitzer range forthe BMW 5-series and 6-series.

In motorsport the right Set Up often makes the difference between first and second places, and our engineers put particular importance on optimum chassis set-up. In the AC Schnitzer TENSION, driving dynamics are decisively improved by the special development of an adjustable AC Schnitzer racing suspension. As well as lowering by 30 mm in relation to its standard brother M6, the spring and damper rates have been clearly modified towards sporting performance.

To counter lateral roll movements the AC Schnitzer antiroll bar kits are fitted to the front and rear axles. A further suspension highlight is the specially developed strut brace in aluminium- carbon combination, which perfectly prevents torsion in the vehicle front.

The TENSION body conversion is absolutely breathtaking, and is totally dedicated to optimising the aerodynamics. A further focal point of the development was the improvement of the air supply and extraction for the power plant and braking system.

The redesigned bonnet of the AC Schnitzer TENSION reveals at first sight - through its striking power bulge and large air outlets - that it conceals an extremely powerful engine which requires maximum cold air flow especially at full load.

Another totally new development is the front skirt which makes the TENSION look even lower and further increases downforce on the front axle at high speeds. Its large air intake provides additional cooling for the engine and front brakes, and gives the TENSION its unmistakeable visual expression.

To provide additional venting for the V10 engine, large air outlet openings have been provided in the new front wings, where the 3 chromed ribs and LED flashers are reminiscent of a shark's mouth.

Adequate air flow is essential for the TENSION to develop its full potential not only in the front of the car: this principle naturally also applies to the rear .
Consequently air ducts for the rear brakes have been worked into the striking side skirts; these skirts not only give the TENSION a more elongated appearance but also ensure a harmonious transition to the huge rear .

The rear skirt accommodates not only the twin exhaust system made totally of stainless steel with chromed Sports Trim tailpipes but also a unique underfloor wing construction with diffuser .

The driver of the AC Schnitzer TENSION has the option of actively changing the vehicle aerodynamics to suit his needs. This is achieved through two interchangeable carbon diffusers which meet the differing needs for downforce on a track or when driving on country roads . The fast action aluminium catches mean that this conversion can be made effortlessly by the driver and the unused diffuser can be carried in a special holder in the boot so conversion can be spontaneous .

The same applies also to the rear wing of the TENSION. This too was designed as a mobile option for the track and has its place either in the boot or, using fast action catches, on the specially redesigned boot lid.

The boot lid of the TENSION is a real eyecatcher even without the rear wing . In contrast to the standard car, it comes without integral rear spoiler , giving smoother lines to the vehicle rear.

The body concept , which makes the TENSION 25 mm wider on each side, is complemented by the AC Schnitzer sports mirrors and the extravagant two-colour paint in Magic Orange Metallic with Carbon Grey .

The AC Schnitzer engineers are currently planning to include in the range a "softened" version of the TENSION aerodynamic concept for the M6, which is now in development.

The interior of the AC Schnitzer TENSION is a combination of developments from the AC Schnitzer range which are available for many BMW models, and special one-off products . The latter include amongst others the racing seats in leather with AC Schnitzer logo and the carbon interior trim in Magic Orange . The 3-spoke airbag sports steering wheel in leather is also fitted. The selector gaiter and handbrake handle are finished in Alcantara with black seams . The arm rests in the doors and on the centre console are finished in Magic Orange leather to match the paintwork. Velours foot mats with embroidered TENSION logo complete the interior. The aluminium accessories consisting of pedal set, foot rests, handbrake handle and a cover for the controller of the "i-Drive" system are however an established part of the
AC Schnitzer range.

The AC Schnitzer TENSION was developed as a technology platform. This Concept Car in the equipment level and form shown here would cost around Ђ 260,000.00. There are no plans for series production.

(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) Aerodynamic components in sporting, elegant design, engine tuning for the 530d variants, alloy and racing rims in various sizes and styles, and numerous interesting accessories: As sales of the new BMW 5-series Touring begin, AC Schnitzer can already offer a sporting tuning range for the elegant estate.

AC Schnitzer improves the appearance of the five-door with well-fitting, easily painted aerodynamic components. For the Touring AC Schnitzer already offer a front spoiler which not only guarantees a more striking outfit but also improves downforce on the front axle. The recessed air intakes provide further optimum cooling for the front brakes. The new BMW is further enhanced by aerodynamic sports door mirrors and side skirts - both already available.

Still in development are the aerodynamic components for the rear of the vehicle. These will shortly include a rear roof spoiler and a rear skirt - for vehicles with and without trailer coupling - to provide aerodynamic balance. Individual highlights are set with the Chromeline Set. Ordered as an option, this sets accents on the front spoiler, side skirts and rear skirt.

The rear skirt makes the new 5-series Touring look more powerful thanks to the integral braced underfloor wing, and harmoniously integrates the solid stainless steel rear silencer with chromed racing tailpipe trim.

As well as sporting appearance and sonorous exhaust note, the AC Schnitzer sports rear silencer primarily ensures an improved gas flow and optimum response behaviour. To complete the aesthetic improvements, a chromed tailpipe trim is part of the broad range of accessories.

For the BMW 530d Touring - with or without the AC Schnitzer sports rear silencer - we are currently developing a performance upgrade. As the popular 3.0 l standard diesel engine in the entire E60 / E61 series is now being converted by BMW to the use of a soot particle filter, our engineers and designers are currently working on corresponding adaptations. Despite the increased power of the AC Schnitzer ACS5 3.0d Touring, the superb driving comfort, moderate fuel consumption and excellent stability naturally remain unchanged.

The suspension concept, already excellent as standard, which uses pneumatic springs on the rear, is currently being refined by our specialists. It will comprise an AC Schnitzer sports suspension including lowering by around 30 mm, the racing strut brace for the front and a special antiroll bar kit, and will further improve the driving dynamics and not least also increase the safety reserves of the 5-series Touring. For pure lowering, a suspension spring kit is also being developed. All components are currently undergoing extensive tests on the public roads and on the North Loop of the Nьrburgring.

The perfect addition to the sports suspension concept and the attractive appearance set of course the AC Schnitzer wheels. The owner of a BMW 5-series Touring faces a pleasant dilemma: To choose between the onepiece and multipiece variants of the totally new AC Schnitzer Type IV wheel and the different variants of the classic Type II and Type III wheels.

The filigree 5-spoke Type IV wheel in the new Design aesthetically suits the avant-garde appearance of the new 5-series Touring. Technically of course it fulfils the promises of its appearance: the new Type IV alloy wheel was developed using top quality materials and modern production processes. It is available as a one-piece alloy wheel in 8.5J x 19" or as a multipiece racing rim in 9.0J or 10.0J x 20". We recommend high performance tyres by Continental and Michelin up to maximum sizes 255/30 R 20 on the front and 295/25 R 20 on the rear.

Or you might prefer one of the successful Type II or Type III wheel designs which are also available in sizes from 8.5J x 18" to 10.0J x 20”.

The cockpit of the BMW 5-series Touring can already be enhanced with chic and practical accessories, e.g. an ergonomically shaped airbag sports steering wheel in leather or with carbon-fibre trim. A carbon-fibre interior trim in silver exclusive design for the dashboard and door trims is also available. The aluminium cover for the controller of the BMW-specific "i-Drive system" sets the finishing touch in every sense. Last but not least, aluminium foot rests and pedals, gear knob or automatic selector lever and finally of course the velours floor mats in AC Schnitzer design complete the entire interior.

In addition, AC Schnitzer offers customised solutions in the fields of traffic telematics and Car Infotainment for optimum integration.

(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) With the E90, BMW has introduced the next epoch in the successful 3-series. True to the motto "The driving force", the 3-series sets the standards for driving pleasure in a new dimension. To quote the worldwide motoring press in countless road tests in the run-up to the official launch, a simple formula defines the 3-series:

Comfort + High Quality Engineering + Sports Performance = E90 So the 3-series offers a superb basis for creating an AC Schnitzer ACS3 from an already excellent BMW.

It is precisely this challenge which faces our engineers and designers to develop a range which will leave nothing to be desired.

The first challenge was to develop a performance upgrade for the 2.0d. This consists of a special Control Unit Program and takes the power of the M47D20 TU standard engine to 147 kW / 200 HP and the maximum torque to 410 Nm at 2.000 rpm.

For all engine variants - with or without performance upgrade - we offer sports rear silencers made from stainless steel, which improve the exhaust gas flow, available. The "chromed" finish comes from the Racing tailpipe, which will not only be part of the silencer but is also available already for purely visual enhancement as a chromed tailpipe trim.

To further improve the driving dynamics in the 3-series, our engineers have developed a wealth of sports suspension components. The first step was the implementation of a spring kit which lowers the vehicle by around 25 - 30 mm.

In the next stage, the specifications for the suspension engineers include a complete sports suspension and antiroll bar kit with racing strut brace for the front as well as a removable version for the rear. The complete modification perceptibly improves the driving behaviour of the 3-series for more sports performance with no significant loss of comfort, and also substantially increase safety reserves on sudden load changes.

Type II and Type III alloys and racing rims are of course available. Wheel/tyre combinations are possible in various sizes from 17" to maximum 19",with 225/35 R 19 on the front and 255/30 R 19 on the rear or optionally 235/35 R 19 all round.
The avant-garde Type IV light alloy and racing rims with their optional chrome elements constitute a true highlight in the wheels sector and are also of course available. In 18" or 19" and soon also in 20" they safely connect the 3-series to the asphalt at all times and transfers the power to the road in the optimum manner.

In addition, the latest AC Schnitzer Type IV wheels with their ultramodern look appear custom-made for the latest 3-series. The maximum wheel/tyre combination is consisting of racing wheels in 9.0J x 20" with tyres in 245/30 R20.

We recommend high performance tyres from Continental and Michelin.

The appearance of the new 3-series is enhanced by the striking contours of the aerodynamic conversion. Depending on personal taste, the customer has a choice between the sports style variant and the Chromeline Design (for the side skirts). Both versions are striking with their modern design, which emphasises externally the high performance internal engineering.

In the sports variant, the side skirts are painted completely in body colour. In the Chromeline variant, additional chromed elements are used.

The BMW E90 is given a quite unique expression thanks to the front spoiler in the new design. This makes the 3-series look even lower and at the same time improves downforce on the front axle.

Aerodynamic balance is provided by the rear roof spoiler, the one-piece rear spoiler and the rear skirt with its striking underfloor wing profile.

The AC Schnitzer aerodynamic range is completed by the sports mirrors.

(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) With the launch of the new 1-series, BMW has entered the strongly contested "compact class" vehicle category for the first time, and presents a vehicle that has jumped to the top of its class even before sales begin.

This posed an even greater challenge to the AC Schnitzer engineers: to develop a special accessories range which takes the "pleasure principle" to an even higher level.
For the 1.8d and the 2.0d versions of the BMW 1-series, AC Schnitzer diesel performance upgrades are already in development, taking the power - depending on engine model - up by around 25 - 30 HP. Despite the stronger power plant, the high running comfort, moderate fuel consumption and excellent stability of course remain unchanged.

With or without the performance upgrade, we recommend our newly developed AC Schnitzer sports rear silencer of V2A special steel with chromed Racing tailpipe trim which ensures improved gas flow.

Faster and more precise gear changes increase the adrenaline surge and improve vehicle acceleration. So we have adapted the AC Schnitzer Short Shift for the BMW 1-series with manual transmission.

There are already a wealth of AC Schnitzer alloys and racing rims available for the BMW
1 series in Type II, Type III and Type IV designs.

As well as various combinations in 17" and 18", the 1-series - known internally as E87 - can be fitted with 19" alloy or racing rims which take tyres of size 235/35 R 19 all round. This modification alone perceptibly improves the driving dynamics. AC Schnitzer recommends high performance tyres from Continental and Michelin.

In addition, the most stylish wheel design is the avant-garde AC Schnitzer Type IV 5-spoke wheel with its star-shaped wheel centre running out pentagonally and single dish per spoke, which is an excellent match for the modern design of the 1-series. Chrome elements can be inserted optionally in the dishes, setting extra highlights.

The driving behaviour of the 1 series becomes even safer and more dynamic with the
AC Schnitzer sports suspension, which is currently undergoing tests on public roads and on the North Loop of the Nьrburgring.
As well as lowering by 30 mm - already available - the suspension concept is completed by a Racing Aluminium strut brace for the front axle and a special antiroll bar kit.

The high technical standards we apply to our products are also evident in the bodywork of the AC Schnitzer ACS1. It was a particular challenge to pick up the new styling language of the BMW 1 series, continue and subtly enhance the lines without appearing obtrusive.

The result is a tailor-made kit for the E87 which fulfils all these attributes. The front part is enhanced by an exciting new front spoiler design in a brand-new look which is attached to the standard front skirt and ensures better downforce.

The harmonious link between the front and rear is created by the AC Schnitzer side skirts and rear roof spoiler which set totally new accents. The design is completed by the new AC Schnitzer rear skirt spoiler which not only harmoniously integrates the sports silencer into the rear but also gives the vehicle a more powerful appearance. A Chromeline set is available as an option which sets highlights on the front spoiler and side skirts.

Exclusivity also predominates in the cockpit: as well as the carbon interior trim in silver or anthracite, and the ergonomically shaped sports airbag steering wheels, the final touch is given by the aluminium accessories e.g. for the controller of the BMW-specific "i-Drive" system, the pedal set and footrests, different gear knobs or handbrake handles. Last but not least, velours footmats are available with the AC Schnitzer Logo.
